House Shutters – Surprising Health and Wealth Benefits Revealed

Lifestyle Magazine Article – September 2015

Eden House Shutters Showroom in North Ascot is definitely the place to visit if you are thinking of transforming your home with shutters. You will quickly be made to feel welcome by owner Fernando Rodrigues, who established the company 15 years ago when shutters first became a ‘must have’ for the stylish home owner.

There is a wide range of shutter designs, colours and materials to choose from but Fernando and his team are extremely knowledgeable and are happy to take time, either at their Showroom or in your home, to help you find the right look for your decor, windows and budget. They are genuinely passionate about shutters with a strong ethos on customer care and service that keeps clients returning for more and recommending the company to friends and families.

Fernando explains, “Our clients are often surprised to discover that the cost of our shutters compares very favourably with that of the larger shutter suppliers. We don’t try to compete with the nationwide companies with their large teams of sales reps. We concentrate our efforts in supplying and fitting shutters in Ascot and up to 25 miles away; and on providing excellent local customer care, good products and workmanship and tidiness from our trained fitters.”

“Our clients like the fact that they have peace of mind working with a well established local family business that offers value for money with a made to measure product. All our team are employed and not on commission which makes a big difference on how we interact with our clients. We value the reputation we have built for excellent customer service and believe that it is listening to our customer and our attention to detail that is so important, especially as each shutter is bespoke.”

Function and style

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.

Designer William Morris (1834-1896)

Home owners are looking for a stylish way to dress their windows within their budget and shutters are a good option as there are different price options depending on the material that is used, “We offer a variety of woods, MDF and a specialist waterproof material that is perfect for bathrooms or areas with high moisture”, explains Fernando. But shutters are more

than just a window treatment as they really do offer function and style. Not only do they look great in a traditional or contemporary setting but they help contribute environmentally by keeping your house cool in the summer, and provide additional insulation during the winter which helps retain heat. Shutters also help with sound insulation as this additional layer helps reduce outside noise – ideal if your home is near a busy road.

Privacy and allergies

Many people choose to fit shutters where privacy is an issue and they don’t want to be overlooked but equally don’t want to block off the light. Or if someone in the home suffers from dust related allergies as shutters produce less dust than curtains.

“If privacy is needed in your bathroom and you don’t want to lose the light, café style shutters are a good solution as they cover the lower section of the window, providing the balance between light and privacy,” explains Sue de Haro, one of the design consultants at Eden House Shutters.

Awkward shaped windows

Shutters are perfect for windows that are tricky to dress with curtains or blinds and are particularly suited to the bay window, a very British architectural feature. Other shaped windows that shutters serve well are arched, round and curved.

Good night’s sleep = black out shutters

Whether you are a night worker needing to sleep in the day, someone who has difficulty sleeping at night or have children that are poor sleepers, artificial or daylight coming through your window covering can be a real problem if it interferes with your sleep. “Try our shutters with integral black out blinds as these really do dramatically reduce any light seepage into a room”, explains Sue.

50 shades of white

Fernando explains that “White is the most popular colour selected for our shutters and we offer quite a few white shades so your interior paint work or windows can be matched. We do have a wider palette of colours, stains and natural woods”

“More recently we have noticed a trend for bright coloured shutters as these can really add an impact but if you want to replicate a particular shade, we offer a colour match service including matching the popular Farrow & Ball and Fired Earth paint shades.”

Landlords and property developers love them! Burglars hate them….

Savvy local landlords and property developers love shutters as they quickly give a property an up to date look whilst making the rooms feel bigger and more stream line and are a long lasting lifestyle feature. Shutters are definitely a fixture and not a fitting so add value to a property as well as increasing the energy efficiency of a home.

Sue adds, “ There is another reason landlords love them and that is because shutters are virtually maintenance free and are very quick and easy to clean – much easier than dealing with dirty curtains in rental properties which may hold onto unpleasant odours.”

“Our shutters are durable and long lasting and come with a three year guarantee but many of our clients have told us that ten years on their shutters are still looking great and functioning well.”

Added security By simply tilting the louvre/slat to a certain angle, you let the light flow in whilst maintaining privacy and keeping unwanted attention out. They act as a great deterrent to potential burglars and reduce the chance of an opportunist break in.

Local businesses love Eden House Shutters and in particular Pavilion Interiors in the Windlesham Garden Centre has fitted a great mix of EHS shutters and blinds throughout their lovely building. You can also spot Eden House shutters and blinds at Fernbank Carpets and at the Ascot Dental Surgery.

Inside and out

Eden House really is a shutter specialist as not only do they offer a choice of internal plantation shutters they are also the leading supplier of external functional shutters in the UK. Fernando says, “Although external shutters aren’t as popular in the UK as in Europe, this is definitely changing as people see external shutters as a great way to give the exterior of a house a face lift , control light and add security with functional shutters.”

What’s new?

“We have just introduced a flatter style louvre that looks particularly good in a dark colour using the widest width of slat (114 mm). This new look is particularly good for large window openings as creates a focal point and adds drama to a room,” says Sue.

Fernando adds, “We have also just introduced a wider choice to our blind collection as we appreciate that shutters are not for everyone or suited to all windows. We are very pleased with our new blind ranges which are for conservatories as well as windows.”
